Would Man Invent the God of the Bible?

A culture would never invent a God like the One revealed in the Bible

Why would anyone invent the idea of God? Atheists and evolutionists claim that ancient man invented the idea of God to explain gaps in scientific knowledge and to explain fearful phenomenon in nature.

First, we do not do that.

Second, this does not explain the source for the idea of God.

If God exists, nothing rises above this matter. If God does not exist, let us eat, drink, and be merry, for we have no God to whom we shall answer. If God does exist, let us believe and obey, for we have a God to whom we must give account.

Inventing God: Why?

Why would anyone invent the idea of God? Okay, so we do not know the reason for something in nature. How does filling in that gap of knowledge with God make it better? What motive would anyone have for inventing the idea of God?

Think of the prophets and apostles. Which one of them was not persecuted? (Acts 7.52). The apostles received nothing for preaching the true and living God. Preachers today live in hot water. If you think preachers have a pleasant life because they preach the existence of God, ask Christian men if they want to devote their lives to preaching, and tell me how many you had to ask before one said he would do it!

Inventing God: How?

Let us assume no God exists. How could ancient man come up with the idea of a super being whom they could not see because He transcends nature?

Ancient man would simply have observed nature. What about it would make him think a super being exists who rules over all things?

If God does not exist, ancient man would have been like secular man. Secular man cannot see God, therefore, the secularist concludes God does not exist. We just do not invent the idea of a perfect supernatural being unless someone plants the idea in our heads. Where did that person get the idea?

Inventing God: Idols

Idolatry shows that man has the idea of the divine, but then perverts that idea. He wants a god created in his own image rather than a God in whose image we are. Psalm 115.3–8 shows the way it is, that when it comes to idolatry, “Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them” (Psa 115.3–8).

When people invent gods, the people make the gods according to what the people like. Every civilization has its god or gods, showing that the idea of the divine is universal. People recognize the truth of Romans 1, but then reject it, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Rom 1.20, 21).

The reason every civilization has a god or gods, although not the God of the Bible, is that they do what Paul said. They observe the evidence of God, but then they do not glorify Him, but create their own gods according to their own liking.

We invent things or get ideas from something that already exists. Ecclesiastes 3 explains that we have eternity in the heart, but we cannot explain it fully, and we cannot understand fully the God who put eternity in our hearts, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end” (Ecc 3.11).

Inventing God: The God of the Bible

No one would have invented the God revealed in the Bible. How do I know that? Look how the world views the God of the Bible. The world hates God.

The secularist’s problem is not that he cannot find evidence of God’s existence; the secularist does not like the God who does exist. Listen to them speak and rarely do they only speak of the arguments for and against God’s existence, no, they typically show things in the Bible that they do not like. They do not like the nature of God.

The God of the Bible allows what helps us. What does He forbid that helps us? He wants what is good for us. The God of the Bible forbids what harms us. Take the laws of nature, science, medicine, whatever and see what is good for us and what harms us. Then compare those things to what the Bible commands, allows, and forbids. You will see that the God of the Bible knows us well. It will sound as though He created us.

Take this challenge: Live the way the Bible directs and see if your life improves. Live contrary to biblical instruction and see if your life degrades.

There is a God in heaven and He is the God above all gods, because He is greater than all invented gods, for they truly are dumb idols, “For You, LORD, are most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods” (Psa 97.9).

Inventing God: Why the Charge Is Made

Why do people deny the existence of God and assert that we have merely invented Him? They do not want Him to exist. He forbids what they want to do, and commands what they do not want to do (Psa 53.1–4).

Romans 1 shows that they refuse to have God in their knowledge. The passage also shows the kind of life they create for denying His existence. When you read this, you will think that you are reading the current news. “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful…” (Rom 1.28–31).

Please do not be like the people mentioned in Romans 1. Refusing to have God in your knowledge will not lead to good things. There is a God in heaven and He does not want those things for you.

He wants good things for you. Know Him. He knows you. Who better to know and who better to have know you?

  1. Who created God? It is an age-old question that has plagued all those who like to think about the big questions. Having grown up as an agnostic non-Christian, it provided me with a potential reason why there might not be any god. Various religions tend to solve the problem in different ways. The LDS church (Mormonism) says that the God (Elohim) to whom we are accountable had a father god, then grew up on a planet as a man, and progressed to become a god himself. Many other religions have claimed that gods beget other gods. Of course the problem with this idea is how did the first god get here? This problem of infinite regression invalidates such religions. Christianity claims that God has always existed. Is this idea even possible? Does science address such issues?

    • I know that some people believe science is the ultimate source of knowledge, but that overstates the case. For example, how does science tell us that George Washington was the first president of the United States? Yet, we know through historical knowledge that he both existed and was the first president.
