How to Discover Whether Something Is Right
By Don Ruhl
- Can I Do It for the Glory of God?
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1Co 10.31).
- Can I Do It in the Name of the Lord?
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Col 3.17).
- Is It of the World?
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever (1Jo 2.15–17).
- Would Jesus Do It?
“For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps…” (1Pe 2.21).
- Does It Have the Appearance of Evil?
“Abstain from every form of evil” (1Th 5.22).
- Does It Weigh Me Down?
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb 12.1).
- Can I Do It Remembering that the Holy Spirit Dwells in Me?
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1Co 6.19, 20).
- Will It Cause Someone to Stumble?
“But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak” (1Co 8.9).
- Would I Want Jesus to Find Me Doing It?
“And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming” (1Jo 2.28).
- Do I Have Any Doubts?
“But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin” (Rom 14.23).
